The very first time I picked up a camera was back in 1996. I borrowed a cheap plastic point and shoot film camera for my grade 8 grad trip. A few clicks of friends later, I thought to myself, hey, why not take some “artistic” photos. I remember one particular scene the most - a tree with bare branches reaching over the edges of a dreary looking river with hundreds of rocks obstructing the water flow. Although I was only a beginner, I was very proud of that shot and I started to see how much fun it was to compose and take pictures. Sadly, I somehow misplaced that camera and consequently, it took about 7 years for photography and I to cross paths again.
At that point, the internet had become the norm. One day I was browsing the world wide web when I randomly came across someone’s personal website titled “58mm”. He described how certain filters were able to enhance images beyond the capabilities of the naked eye. I was very intrigued by this concept and spent the next hour analyzing each of his photos. As I gazed at his beautiful and inspiring work, the colours seemed to pop in a way I hadn’t noticed before. My eyes were opened, if you will. Shortly after, I came to the realization that it was about time I owned my own camera… not just any camera, but a good one!

Passagemaker Magazine

Passagemaker Magazine

By way of background, I should explain that I have been working toward this event for some time. I was struggling toward a suitable design that would offer ultimate safety and yet be small enough to be affordable. I was primarily interested in the range of such a boat so that it could make long passages between the necessary stops for resupply of both food and fuel, plus giving the crew some time ashore between the legs of the race.
The major factor was fuel capacity to achieve the desired range. I did not want a floating fuel tank, so the determining factor was an engine that would give maximum range on a minimum of fuel.  This, of course, dictates that the engine provide relatively slow speed. Even so, the boat would have to be fairly light in order for the engine to power it at some fairly reasonable pace.

Biotechnology might seem like a new science to many, but it has its roots in the work of some early big thinkers — among them George Washington Carver, arguably one of the world’s first industrial biotechnologists and the father of sustainable farming.
Come June, BIO will give a nod to Carver’s biotech heritage when it honors an individual for groundbreaking industrial biotech work with the third annual George Washington Carver Award for Innovation in Industrial Biotechnology.
To help farmers adopt sustainable practices, Carver and his students developed more than 300 industrial uses for peanuts, sweet potatoes and other crops that could be grown in rotation with cotton and corn. His inventions included plastics, glue, soaps, paints, dyes for cloth and leather, medicines and cosmetic ingredients — all made from crops and agricultural residues.

Car Trawler

Car Trawler

Car Trawler is a car rental distribution system that connects car rental companies such as Hertz or Avis with other transport providers such as rail or airlines. Low cost airlines are well accustomed to incorporating car rental into the ticket booking path to boost ancillary revenue. Car Trawler, and other similar providers such asholidaycars.com, offer the technical platform as well as the relationships with individual car rental companies to facilitate this.

For rail operators, ancillary revenue is still an area requiring some attention. While the basics such as food and beverage on-board are covered, there are still a load of opportunities available for operators looking not only to boost non-fare revenue, but also to provide a better service for customers. These include things like travel insurance, hotel reservations, on-board wi-fi, duty-free shopping and of course, car hire. And with some airlines boosting total revenue dramatically by incorporating ancillaries (have a look at this related post onhow Alitalia boosted revenue by 15%), the early adopters from within the rail sector stand to make considerable gains.

Carver Museum

Carver Museum

The Carver Museum was developed with substantial support from admirer and industrialist Henry Ford. Carver wanted the fruits of his life's work on display at the museum. He hoped that the exhibits would inspire children to live better lives.
The original museum was housed in a remodelled building and was filled with Carver's geological and mycological (fungus) specimens made over a lifetime. Carver's artwork and crafts were also displayed in the museum. Mounted regional bird specimens and giant vegetables preserved in jars that he used as "show and tell" at farm and county fair demonstrations became part of the museum.
Carver first served as Director of the Agricultural Department where he developed agricultural extension services for black farmers and homemakers. Milbank Hall was the site of his agricultural experiments. His last laboratory was housed in the Carver Museum.
Tuskegee Institute donated the home of Booker T. Washington and the Carver Museum to the National Park Service in 1977, and much of the Carver collection in 1979.
